Was EAM Jaishankar asked to leave Trump’s Inauguration Ceremony? Fact-Check

A video is making the rounds on social media claiming that India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar was asked to leave Donald Trump’s inauguration as 47th U.S. President, in a globally televised event on january 20, 2025.

The video shows an official speaking with a person near Jaishankar, who was seen standing in the front row when the oath was taking place.

The caption reads in Hindi: “यह वाकई शर्मनाक है कि अधिकारियों ने विदेश मंत्री एस. जयशंकर को शो से हटाने की मांग की। एक भारतीय होने के नाते, मैं बहुत दुखी हूं और इस कृत्य की कड़ी निंदा करता हूं। भारत सरकार को इस पर ध्यान देना चाहिए और उचित कार्रवाई करनी चाहिए। {Translated it reads: “It is really shameful that the authorities demanded the removal of Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar from the show. As an Indian, I am deeply saddened and strongly condemn this act. The Indian government must take note of this and take appropriate action.”]

The video has been shared here and here. All these  claims have described the event as below: “What a shame! Authorities demanding S. Jaishankar to leave the show,” wrote one X user.

Another user wrote: “The US authorities & cabinet members demanded the removal of EAM S. Jaishankar from the Inauguration Ceremony at the White House because he shamelessly refused when he was asked to stand at the last row. No respect left for Modi & co worldwide.”

FACT-CHECK

The video showing the watermark of the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies (JCCIC) makes it authentic and the footage matches the original live stream of the event. Here’s the original video:

The particular event takes place at 3:08 timestamp in which a woman official approaches a cameraperson crouched next to Jaishankar. The official gestures indicating them to move which the cameraperson promptly complies and leaves the frame shortly after. Throughout the interaction, the official was never seen interacting or speaking to Jaishankar as claimed.

The Photos shared from the event by Jaishankar later on his official Twitter account show that he remained seated prominently in the first row alongside other dignitaries, confirming his presence during the event.

Hence, the claim is misleading.

Conclusion: Misleading. The video in question misrepresents the actions of a ceremony official who was interacting with a media person and never interacted with Jaishankar.
