Rahul Gandhi never said INDIA alliance will remove 50% reservations; Fact Check

As reservation is taking center stage in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in India, several misleading statements are appearing on social media. One such poster had a statement that Rahul Gandhi announced that the I.N.D.I.A. alliance would reduce reservations by 50% if they are voted to power.

The writing said, “If I.N.D.I. alliance comes in power they will remove reservation by 50% !” It has been shared on Facebook here:

FACT CHECK

When the Digiteye India team checked for the authenticity of the claim, a simple search on Google News revealed that the Congress leader has promised to remove the current cap of 50% reservation in government recruitments if INDIA alliance is elected to power. He meant that the reservation quota would be increased if their government came to power.

Here’s Rahul Gandhi’s speech about reservations while addressing a rally in Jharkhand as a part of his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.

Rahul Gandhi can be heard stating clearly about removing the 50% reservation cap. “Not more than 50 percent reservation is given under present rules. The Congress government or I.N.D.I.A government will remove the 50 percent cap on the reservations once they are voted to power.”

He has reiterated the same at several places during his Yatra as seen here too. Hence, Rahul Gandhi did not announce that the I.N.D.I.A alliance would reduce reservations by 50% if they are voted to power.

Claim: Rahul Gandhi said the I.N.D.I.A alliance would remove reservations by 50% if they are voted to power.

Conclusion: Totally False. Rahul Gandhi never said INDIA alliance would remove the 50% reservation if elected to power. Instead, he said the Congress government or I.N.D.I.A. government will remove the 50 percent CAP on the reservations once voted to power.

Rating: Totally False — Five rating
