FACT-CHECK

The video has gone viral recently, and Digiteye India took it up for fact-checking after receiving a request on its WhatsApp Tipline. When we took out keyframes from the video and conducted a Google Reverse Image search, the result showed that it was a six-year-old video from an annual event called India-Bangladesh Milan Mela, which facilitates people from both countries to meet and exchange gifts mutually.

See the video titled ‘India Bangladesh Milan Mela 15 April 2018. মিলন মেলা at India Bangladesh border’ and it was uploaded on Youtube on June 5, 2018. The annual event has been covered over the period here and here.

A simple Google Search revealed that the event is usually held at two Border Security Force (BSF) outposts in West Bengal, where people arrive to meet their friends and relatives in Bangladesh. On the other side, it was coordinated by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). One can see sweets and gifts are exchanged. But the news reports show that the event was cancelled in 2023.
