Did 110 Muslims get elected as MPs in 2024 Lok Sabha elections? Fact Check

Though BJP won 240 seats, falling short of 32 seats for absolute majority, the National democratic Alliance led by BJP came to power with 293 seats in the 18th Lok Sabha elections and the new coalition government was formed on June 9, 2024 with Narendra Modi as Prime Minister for the third consecutive term.

Amid the news of new government formation and the end of election process for the 18th Lok Sabha, a post on social media surfaced with a claim that 110 Muslims MPs were elected in 2024 Lok Sabha elections, suggesting that more and more Muslim MPs are getting elected.

FACT-CHECK

Digiteye India took it up for fact-check and searched the data available on the Election Commission of India’s website. Though the website has all the results displayed about the 543 parliamentary constituencies, we noticed that only 24 Muslim candidates were elected as MPs in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

In all, 78 Muslim candidates contested from major parties in 2024 Lok Sabha elections, and 24 of them were elected. Out of these 24 Muslim MPs, 21 are from the INDIA bloc. While AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi has been elected from Hyderabad, two others are independents — Engineer Rashid from Baramulla (Jammu and Kashmir) and Mohammad Haneefa from Ladakh.

Party-wise, the data shows that Congress has 9 Muslim MPs, Trinamool Congress (TMC) 5, Samajwadi Party 4, Indian Union Muslim League 2, and the National Conference (NC) one.

In fact, in 2024 the number of Muslim MPs declined from 26 in 2019 Lok Sabha elections by two, while the 2014 Lok Sabha saw only 22 Muslim MPs elected to the Lok Sabha. The highest number recorded was in 1980 when the Lok Sabha had 49 Muslim MPs.

Hence, the claim that 110 Muslim MPs were elected to Lok Sabha in 2024 is false and misleading.

Claim: In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, 110 Muslims were elected as Members of Parliament.

Conclusion: The claim is false. Only 24 Muslims were elected as MPs in the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections, two less from 2019 elections.

Rating: Misleading —
