Did Akhilesh Yadav make a statement encouraging people to consume cow meat? Fact Check

Claim: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav made a statement encouraging people to consume cow meat.

Conclusion: The claim is misleading. Akhilesh Yadav was commenting on cow tourism in UP and the clip is taken out of context. His actual statement pertained to cow-derived products and government policy, not meat consumption.

Rating: Misleading —

Several social media users have claimed that Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav urged people to consume cow meat. Verified X user ‘Sudhir_mish’ made such a claim and shared a 31-second video clip of Yadav speaking at a press conference.

The post’s caption when translated reads: “Eat and drink cow things… we have no objection…How low can they go to please Muslims?” The clip, viewed over 37,000 times, implies Yadav is promoting cow meat (beef) consumption. View the post below –

FACT CHECK

DigitEYE India decided to investigate this claim and found that it is misleading. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav did not promote the consumption of cow meat. His comments were on UP Government’s Cow Tourism initiative where he speaks about cow products and saving people from bull attacks.

We first conducted a reverse image search from various keyframes of the video to learn about the issue. The search took us to a full version of the footage uploaded on various channels including The Hindu and the official Samajwadi Party Youtube channel and X account.

In the video below, at 18:20 timestamp, Yadav addressed the question of Cow Tourism in Uttar Pradesh. He begins by checking his files and bringing up “43 cases” of stray animal attacks that have severely harmed the people.

Following this from 18:45, he asks “what is the relationship of a cow to a bull? Whether it’s cow tourism, cow sava (serve cows or worship cows) or eat other cow products… we have no objection but at least save Uttar Pradesh from bulls… remove the bull Government”

He further cites the case of a person from Aligarh, Lucknow who lost their lives and other members whose cars have crashed against bulls. Moreover, he says that trains have also crashed against these bulls.

The clip shared by the users has been clipped to create a false narrative. Yadav did not encourage beef consumption rather he attacked the government on its failure to curb bull attacks.

Thus, the claim is misleading.
