Several social media users including Congress leader Supriya Shrinate on August 18, 2025 claimed that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma corruptly allotted 3,000 bigha to the Adani group. Accompanied by a video clip of a Gauhati High Court hearing, the caption also stated that the judge, Justice Sanjay Kumar Medhi was shocked.

The judge in the video questions the scale, asking, “Is this a joke?” and “You are giving a whole district?” while emphasizing public interest over private needs. The Congress has also made the same claim on their official X account here.

Another verified X user ‘mr_mayank’ among many others shared the same clips stating that “Himanta needs to go to jail, his end is coming”. Posted on 17 August 2025, his post gained around 853,000 views. View the post here.

FACT CHECK

DigitEYE India decided to investigate this claim and discovered that it is misleading in nature. The cement company in question is Mahabal Cement which is unrelated to the Adani Group.

We began by conducting a web search with phrases like “CM Himanta gives land to Adani” and came across an official clarification by the Adani Group. The official media statement, released on 18 August 2025 states that “Mahabal Cement is not related to, owned by or connected with the Adani Group in any manner whatsoever.”

View the whole statement released by the Adani group here.

We also learned from a report published by the Newslaundry on 19 August 2025, that the actual issue was ecological concern. The report observed how “the long-running conflict between tribal villagers and land allotments in Sixth Schedule areas – was once again sidelined.” However, this has nothing to do with the Adani group, view a snippet from the report below –

News outlet The Hindu has reported about this on 19th Aug. See here.

Even in the video shared by the users shows Justice Medhi is explicitly referencing “Mahabal Cement” when querying the allotment. The hearing pertains to a public interest litigation (PIL) against environmental clearances for the project, not corruption or Adani.

Thus, the claim is misleading due to the wrongful association with Adani. All evidence points to Mahabal Cement as the beneficiary and the main issue is an ecological one. [Check above 2 paras]
