Did Bengaluru police blame it on a ‘player who had to fly for London’ for IPL stampede? Fact Check

A claim with the picture of Bengaluru Police Commissioner B. Dayananda is being shared in social media with a claim suggesting that the officer mentioned that the request for postponing the victory celebrations of RCB win in IPL was ignored by the RCB management and Karnataka government because a player had to fly for London.

The caption reads: “Bengaluru Police, “Our personnel were exhausted. Our request to either confine the celebration to a single venue or postpone it to Sunday, was ignored by RCB management & Karnataka govt bcz a player had to fly for London. UNBELIEVABLE.”

It has been shared here, here and here.

FACT CHECK

When Digiteye India received a request for fact-checking the claim, our team quickly searched the relevant news reports. The original quote was taken from an unnamed source and reported by Deccan Herald as seen below:

Quoting unnamed source, the DH report stated: “Reliable sources said that RCB, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) and the state government ignored police advice to postpone the celebrations. ‘We tried to discourage them but there was a mad frenzy. The celebrations had continued into the early hours, and our personnel were exhausted. Though we managed to cancel the victory procession, our request to either confine the celebrations to a single venue or postpone it to Sunday.'”

Clearly there was no mention of any player leaving for London as the reason behind rushing for victory celebrations. And Virat Kohli did not leave for London but for Mumbai the next day. Hence, the claim was unauthentic and false.

Claim: Bengaluru Police’s request to postpone victory celebration after IPL win rejected because a player had to leave for London.

Conclusion: Misleading. News report quoting unnamed source never mentioned any player’s London schedule as the reason for not postponing the victory celebration.

Rating: Misleading —
