Several social media users have claimed that Elon Musk has added the Somaliland flag to X, his platform. X user ‘SaidAden365’ made such a claim asserting that “Elon Musk has officially added the Somaliland flag emoji to the X platform (formerly Twitter).”
The post includes two images: a “Breaking News” graphic featuring Elon Musk’s photo overlaid with text about a “new independent nation” being born. There is a second image showing a grid of flag emojis with an arrow pointing to what resembles Somaliland’s flag. View the post below:

FACT CHECK
DigitEYE India investigated the claim and found it to be false. As of now, X has not added the Somaliland flag to its platform nor Elon Musk commented on it, and there is no official communication about this. Users cannot use the flag since it has not been added.
We first conducted a web search with the phrase “X has added the Somaliland flag” to learn more about the claim. There were no credible reports or evidence that suggest Elon Musk’s platform X has added such a flag. The search results yielded reports of Israel’s recognition of Somaliland but no news about X adding the flag.
Following this, we came across a report that shed light on how flag emojis are decided. According to an article, “the ISO 3166 maintenance agency does not assign official country code elements to other geopolitical areas or countries that are not member states of the UN.” View a section from this article below –

ISO 3166 codes are standardized short codes for countries and their subdivisions, used globally for identification in IT, logistics, and databases, defined in three parts by the ISO: Alpha-2 (two letters, e.g., SO for Somalia), Alpha-3 (three letters, e.g., SOM), and Numeric (three digits, e.g., 706 for Somalia).
Somaliland lacks an official ISO 3166 code because it remains an unrecognized state and lacks international recognition, meaning it’s not a member of the United Nations (UN) or a recognized sovereign entity, and ISO 3166 standards only cover UN members and recognized territories, assigning codes like SO (Somalia) for the entire region, despite Somaliland functioning independently for decades. From a global standards perspective, Somaliland falls under Somalia’s code (SO), as it’s technically a region within Somalia. Therefore, Somaliland has no official flag emoji.
A query has been raised on Apple Support Community platform where a user requested a Somaliland emoji in the Apple system back in January, 2022. However, once again, due to the lack of ISO 3166 code, no emoji can be created. View a screenshot of this below –

Lastly, Elon Musk has not announced anything about the addition of a Somaliland flag. When we tried using the Somaliland flag on X, there were no results. Any attempt of searching for the flag or typing the name on the keyboard resulted in “No Emojis found”, proving that it has not been added.

Thus, the claim is false.
