FACT CHECK
DigitEYE India decided to investigate this claim and found that it is false. The quote appears to be fabricated with no reliable evidence showing that Marsh ever said it. His verified remarks, in contrast, were about the team’s disappointment and emotional response after the loss.
We first conducted a web search for the phrase “Australia knocked out of T20 and post match conference” to learn more. As per an article, “Australia squandered a good start and lost by eight wickets “ against Sri Lanka. The Australia cricket teams’ hopes of qualification “was doused for good after Zimbabwe’s match against Ireland in Group B at the Pallekele Cricket Stadium in Kandy was washed out on Tuesday.” Even though Australia still has a pending match against Oman, it will not be possible to qualify.
After learning the context, we searched for the post match press conference delivered by Australian captain Mitchell Marsh. According to an Al Jazeera article, Australia captain Mitchell Marsh said the team’s fate was now out of their hands, remarking that they were “in the lap of the gods.” He also noted the emotional atmosphere in the dressing room, describing it as a “disappointed bunch” that felt it had not performed at its best. Another article published by Fox Sports also accounts Marsh’s comments following Australia’s loss to Sri Lanka on February 16, 2026. Marsh described the team as “pretty shattered” after the loss, admitting it was “disappointing” and crediting Sri Lanka for outplaying them. He said the players were “hurt” and had believed they could “get the job done but we were outplayed.”
Speaking about the batting collapse, Marsh praised Sri Lankan opener Pathum Nissanka’s innings, saying “Nissanka just played brilliantly to take our situation and our team out of it,” He further said that “It was an incredible innings, and we didn’t have many answers for him [Nissanka] tonight.” View a section from the report below –

The complete press conference featuring Marsh is available on ICC – International Cricket Council among other platforms. These recordings show no evidence of the alleged quote, but rather emphasizing team emotions and the opposition’s batting prowess. Searches for the quote in the claim do not return any verified results or quotes by Marsh.
Thus, the claim is false.
