Did Nepal protesters march in support of Indian PM Modi? Fact Check

Claim: During the Nepal Protests of September 2025, people were marching in support of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Conclusion: The claim is misleading. The footage which is being circulated originates from Sikkim  during the state’s anniversary celebrations of statehood, and has no connection with Nepal protests.

Rating: Misleading —

On September 10, 2025, X user ‘KajalKushwaha’ posted a video claiming it showed widespread support for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Nepal. The caption in Hindi reads: “देखो चमचों मोदी नेपाल में भी छाया हुआ है‚ तुम लोग डूब कर मर क्यों नहीं जाते आहुल गांडी को साथ में लेकर के।”. The translation in English says “Look (Rahul Gandhi) followers, Modi is dominating in Nepal too, why don’t you people drown and die taking ‘ahul’ [referring to Rahul] Gandhi with you.”

The video depicts a vibrant procession of people in traditional attire holding a banner welcoming Modi, accompanied by Indian flags and celebratory chants. The post gained around 236,000 views and more than 15,000 likes. View the post below:

Another X user shared the same claim here in Hindi.

Translated it reads: “The people of Nepal want a nationalist government by removing the communist government in Nepal. There is a need for a Narendra Modi there as well. And in India, some people have been adopting the strategy of “sama, dama, danda, bheda” for 11 years to remove Modi, but nothing is happening because the people themselves are Janardana”

FACT CHECK

DigitEYE India decided to investigate this claim and discovered that it is misleading. The banner clearly states that it is from Sikkim who were welcoming PM Modi during an event in May 2025.

The misinformation appears timed with Nepal’s Gen Z-led uprising in early September 2025, where youth protested against corruption, nepotism, and a social media ban, leading to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s resignation on September 9.

The banner in the original video explicitly reads “Sikkimese 300 Tribes Warmly Welcome Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi Ji. To Sikkim. Taktho Longchumbho,” indicating the location as Sikkim, an Indian state. Visual inspection of video frames shows Indian tricolor flags and traditional Sikkimese attire, not Nepalese elements. After conducting a reverse image search from the video keyframes, we learned that this video dates to May 29, 2025, during Sikkim’s 50th statehood anniversary celebrations. An official PIB report published on May 29 confirms that PM Modi addressed the people via video conference and greeted the people of Sikkim on this special day.

The Sikkim Government had also released an official press release on their website pertaining to the virtual address by PM Modi. This can be viewed here

The original context shows a rally organized by the Limboo (Limbu) tribe under the Sukhim Yakthung Sapsok Songchumbho banner to welcome Modi, who addressed the event virtually due to weather canceling his physical/personal visit. View a facebook post here with the correct context.

These claims and videos were falsely attributed to Nepal protests urging PM Modi’s like leadership in Nepal. The footage is taken during  the Sikkim’s 50th statehood anniversary celebrations in Sikkim state and not from the Nepal protests from September, 2025.

Thus, the claim is misleading.
