Rating: Misrepresentation —

A viral clip has been circulating around social media platforms featuring journalist Rajdeep Sardesai and actress Rani Mukherjee. Verified X user ‘MithilaWaala’ shared this clip, claiming that Sardesai insensitively asked Bollywood actress Rani Mukerji if she had “become very fat after marriage.”

In response, Mukerji allegedly scolded or reprimanded him harshly “like a dog,” prompting the video to be immediately edited to remove that segment. View the post below:

FACT CHECK

DigitEYE India decided to fact check this claim and found that it is misleading. The post misrepresents a scripted movie re-enactment as a real altercation. No evidence supports a personal weight comment or video deletion; it’s a cropped clip from a promotional event.

We first conducted a reverse image search from various keyframes of the video to find the original clip. The complete 48-minute session, available on India Today’s YouTube channel, features Sardesai moderating a promotional discussion on Rani Mukerji’s National Award for Hindi Movies “Mrs. Chatterjee vs. Norway” and “Mardaani” franchise. View the whole footage below –

Along with Rani Mukherjee, another guest IPS officer Meeran Chadha Borwankar is also present with her. Borwankar then describes a famous scene from Mardaani(2014) from 31:15 onwards and suggests that Mukherjee should re-enact it. At approximately 32:25–33:04, Sardesai playfully asks Mukerji to demonstrate her “tough cop” persona from Mardaani (2014).

This reflects a scripted Mardaani moment where her character rebukes a sexist remark about post-marriage weight gain by a villain. Mukerji laughs afterward, joking about “Bengali women being dangerous” at home, followed by audience cheers.

At 46:45 of the original video, the hosts teases “I don’t think anybody’s seen Rajdeep be scolded like that ever,” alluding to the re-enactment. And in the entire video there was no comment on weight gain. The full session shows cheerful interaction.

Thus, the claim is Misrepresentation.
