Did Russia snub India and deliver advanced engines for Pakistan’s JF-17 fighter jets? Fact Check

Claim: Russia has rejected India’s request and decided to supply advanced RD-93MA engines for Pakistan’s JF-17 Block III fighter jets.
Conclusion: The claim is misleading. There was no official confirmation from Russian government regarding supply of RD-93MA engines to Pakistan, however news reports suggest that the engines are being supplied by China.

The Modi government must explain why Russia – once India’s most reliable strategic ally – has chosen to ignore New Delhi’s appeals and proceed with supplying advanced RD-93MA engines to Pakistan’s fleet of Chinese-made JF-17 fighter jets. The latest Block III variant of this…

FACT CHECK
DigitEYE India decided to investigate this claim and found that it is false. Russia has denied supplying upgraded RD-93MA engines to Pakistan for their JF-17 Block III jets.
We first conducted a keyword search with the phrase “Russia sends advanced RD-93MA engines to Pakistan” to learn about the matter. WION cited Russian sources stating no such cooperation with Pakistan exists that would discomfort India. The Russian source said that there was “No confirmation on such a development”, terming it “illogical”. Find the report published by WION on October 4, 2025 here.

We then came across another report published by Times Now on 5th October, 2025. The report highlights how the Russian source had told Times Now that such reports “illogical” and not credible for “serious and professional observers. View a section of the article below:

The Economic Times too posted an article “Russia terms reports of JF-17 engine supplies to Pakistan as “mischievous.” See the facebook post below:
There was no official confirmation from Russian government regarding the supply of advanced RD-93MA engines to Pakistan. Further search revealed that Russia has not been supplying the RD-93MA engines to Pakistan directly for its JF-17 Block III fighter jets. However, Pakistan was able to procure the previous version of the engine, RD-33, since 2004, while the modified RD-93 engines are reportedly making inroads via China, as per some research articles available online.

The RD-93 engine, produced by the Russian Klimov plant is a modified version of the RD-33 engine and research articles suggest that China has been supplying the same to Pakistan under a loose trilateral Russia-China-Pakistan alliance since 2017. See the video here.
Hence, the advanced version RD-93MA engines being supplied by Russia now stems from the old arrangement, and the issue is not new, which has been denied by Russian sources in recent news reports. Therefore, the claim that Russia ignored India’s demand NOW and is supplying these RD-93MA engines to Pakistan is misleading.
