Several social media users have shared an image, claiming that actor Timothée Chalamet fell down during the Oscars 2026. Verified X user ‘DiscussingFish’ shared such a post with the caption : “Timothée Chalamet has reportedly fallen down the stairs at the #Oscars” Attached to the image is a picture featuring a man in a white suit falling down the stairs. The post gained more than 12.3 million views and can be seen below –

FACT CHECK
DigitEYE India decided to investigate this claim and found it to be false. Timothée Chalamet appeared safely on the 2026 Oscars red carpet wearing a white Givenchy suit. There are no reliable reports or verified footage supporting the claim, and the image circulating is a meme surfacing online freequently since 2015.
We first conducted a reverse image search with the phrase “Timothée Chalamet falls down at Oscars 2026” to learn more. However, no major media outlet or organization has written about such an accident. The only results were of the same claim or different posts showcasing the same image in the claim without any concrete proof or video.
Following this, we conducted a reverse image search on the image to learn about the origin or context. We came across several posts that use the same image but with different contexts/celebrity names. For example, one post uses the same image and mentions J-hope while the other post claims that Noah Schnapps has fallen down. Thus, the authenticity of the image could not be verified or trusted.
Next, we expanded our search and continued to get more results/posts about the context of the image. The search took us to an instagram post on March 7, 2026 that mentions that the “photo was taken during the Cannes Film Festival in 2011, when a man (an unidentified attendee) slipped while walking up the red-carpet staircase outside the Palais des Festivals.” The post further says that this resulted in a famous “Jason Derulo falling at the Met Gala” meme/joke that resurfaces every year. To verify this context, we searched for reports about the Jason Derulo meme at the Met Gala. According to a report by Hindustan Times published on May 2, 2023, mentions that the “joke first started back in 2015, with a tweet…claiming that Jason Derulo had taken a tumble at the Met Gala.” Jason Derulo himself had denied such claims in video interview on 14 May 2015.
On further search, we could get the context of the viral image. This incident happended at the 64th Cannes Film Festival on May 17, 2011 in Cannes as seen below, and not from the recent Oscars 2026 Red Carpet event.

The Academy’s official X account posted zero/No mention of Chalamet, stairs, or any fall during Oscars 2026. Lastly, we went through the original footage of the Oscars 2026 Red Carpet to check for any accident. Timothée Chalamet arrives (11:50 onwards) strutting the red carpet, smiling, and posing without any stumble. No security intervention or fall is visible in any legitimate video coverage.
Thus the Image from the 64th Cannes Film Festival on May 17, 2011 is taken, attributing it to different celebrities, claims are made.
Hence the claim is false.
