Did India Get Permanent Membership in UN Security Council with Veto Power? Fact Check

A recurrent claim on social media surfaced again stating that India has been granted permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) with veto power, a status conferred to five members — China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The claim reads: “BHARAT GOT A PERMANENT MEMBERSHIP IN UNSC WITH VETO POWER! CONGRATULATIONS भारत को संयुक्त राष्ट्र संघ की सुरक्षा काउंसिल में वीटो पावर के साथ स्थाई सदस्यता मिली है। पहले केवल पांच देशों को यह दर्जा प्राप्त था।अब छ: देश हो गए हो गये हैं। हार्दिक बधाई और शुभकामनाएं। (Translated: India has got permanent membership with veto power in the Security Council of the United Nations. Earlier only five countries had this status. Now there are six countries. Hearty congratulations and best wishes.)

FACT CHECK
In the context of PM Narendra Modi’s speech on September 23, 2024, at the UN General Assembly, the claim resurfaced on social media stating that India has got permanent membership with veto power in the Security Council of the United Nations. The fact is that there are only five permanent UNSC members who hold veto power, which allows them to block any decision, even if all other members agree.
India is not yet a permanent member of the UNSC and does not hold veto power. The Security Council has 15 members but only five permanent members—China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States— hold the privilege of veto power. The other ten non-permanent members are elected for two-year terms.
Currently, India is not one of these permanent members though countries like the United States, France, and the United Kingdom have voiced support for India becoming a permanent UNSC member. Hence, the claim is false.

Conclusion: False. India has not been given permanent membership in the UNSC, nor does it have veto power.
