A viral claim is making the rounds on social media stating that a FASTag-based toll system for motorcycles and scooters will begin mid-July this year. These viral claims also included potential toll fee structures for two-wheelers.

These claims can be seen here and here.

FACT-CHECK

When searched for authenticity for the claim on the official websites of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and NHAI, there was no mention of note on toll charges for two-wheelers.

Further check on social media revealed that the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, dismissed such claims and posted clarification in Hindi on X.com as shown below.

The English translation reads: “Important: Some media houses are spreading misleading news about imposing toll tax on two-wheeler vehicles. No such decision has been proposed. The exemption on toll for two-wheeler vehicles will continue. Spreading misleading news without verifying the truth to create a sensation is not a sign of healthy journalism. I condemn this.”

Another clarification came from the NHAI too as shown here:

The NHAI has also confirmed that no such proposal is under consideration and issued an advisory for viewers to verify with official sources before believing such viral claims. Hence, the claim is false.
