Several social media users have claimed that Illegal Bangladeshi Rohingyas are protesting in West Bengal over the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls. Verified X user ‘sanjoychakra’ made such a claim, writing “See how they have come out against SIR(Special Intensive Revision of Voters’ List) in West Bengal.
Illegal Bangladeshis and Rohingyas must be deported.” The post gained around 15,000 likes and more than 266,000 views which can be seen below –
Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is a comprehensive, door-to-door verification and update of electoral rolls undertaken by the Election Commission of India (ECI) to ensure accurate and error-free voter lists which can be achieved by including eleigible voters, deleting duplicates, deceased, ineligible names/voters.

FACT CHECK
DigitEYE India decided to investigate this claim and found that it is misleading. The footage is from a protest in Bangladesh back in September 2025. This clip has no connection to the current SIR context in West Bengal that was announced by the ECI.
We first began by conducting a reverse image search of various keyframes of the clip to learn about its origin. Our search took us to the same clip posted by Facebook user ‘Biplob Biplob’ on September 15, 2025. The clip is titled in Bengali “আজকে আন্দোলনের ভিডিও চিত্র” which translates to “Video footage of today’s movement” in English. View the post here:
Upon checking the user’s bio, we learned that he lives in Faridpur, Dhaka, Bangladesh. While we could not confirm what is the exact context or reason for the protest, this clip is not from West Bengal and has not been covered by any media outlets.
Meanwhile, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar announced the second phase of SIR in 12 states on October 27, 2025. A report by the Hindustan Times published on October 27, 2025 writes about this. It mentions how “The second phase aims to expand the initiative’s reach, ensuring more citizens are registered and included in the poll panel’s database ahead of elections in those respective states.” View a section of the report below:

This shows that incident/protest shown in claimed video footage happened much before the SIR was announced.
Thus, the claim is misrepresentation. The footage is not from West Bengal or India but originates from Bangladesh, predating the SIR announcement.
