FACT CHECK

DigitEYE India decided to investigate this claim and found it to be misleading. The footage is from the 2006 Golden Globe Awards, and the woman who appears to “disappear” is actually Johansson’s mother, Melanie Sloan. Johansson later clarified this during an appearance on ‘The Tonight Show’ Starring Jimmy Fallon in November 2023. When viewed from other angles, it’s evident that Sloan remained behind her the entire time and did not vanish.

We first conducted a reverse image search on the clip to learn about its origin and authenticity. The search took us to a clip on Youtube titled : “Scarlett Johansson Fashion Snapshot Golden Globes 2006”. In the video, Scarlett Johansson is wearing the same red dress as shown in the claim. Following this, an article by China Daily published in 2006 gave us more context about the event. The article features Scarlett Johansson in her red dress and mentions that “Scarlett Johansson arrives at the 63rd Annual Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills, California January 16, 2006. Johansson is nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture for her work in “Match Point”. View this section below –

Another article by Spokesman Spokesman published in 2007 also confirms that Johansson arrived at the 2006 Golden Globes ceremony to promote her film.

Next, we conducted a web search to learn whether Johansson has debunked this claim or reacted to it. During ‘The Tonight Show’ Starring Jimmy Fallon in November 2023, Johansson reacted to this viral clip in front of the audience. At 1:55 timestamp, Jimmy Fallon describes the incident to her and plays the clip. Reacting to this at 2:11, Scarlett Johansson immediately says “Oh my God, that is my mom! … That woman with the dark hair, that is my mother” and jokingly says “I’ve been looking for her for like the last 15 years.” Upon searching about her mother, Melanie Solan, we learnt that she worked as a producer.

Seeking more clarification, we wanted to verify if this could be an optical illusion caused by Johansson’s mother standing directly behind her. In the comments of the claim, a user shared a post that showcases her mother, still behind her from a different camera angle. Other users have also clarified and shared a video from a different camera angle, proving that her mother did not disappear.

The woman did not disappear, but from one camera angle she enters blind spot and with Johansson’s inadvertent movements it looks as if she disappered.

Thus, the claim is misleading.
