Claim : Video allegedly shows how Chinese machines are cleaning up marine plastic waste.
Conclusion : The claim is a case of misrepresentation. The video actually depicts an ocean-cleanup technology developed, deployed and operated by The ‘Ocean Cleanup’ Organization. This is a Netherlands-based non-profit organization and not a Chinese machine or technology.

FACT CHECK
DigitEYE India decided to investigate this claim and found it to be a case of misrepresentation. The footage shows an ocean-cleaning system created, deployed and operated by The Ocean Cleanup, a Netherlands-based non-profit organization. There is no evidence to suggest that it is a Chinese machine or technology.
Upon reviewing the original post, we found that it had been reposted with a new caption, the original was from The Ocean Cleanup. The original post is captioned, “According to our projections, we expect to be able to clean the entire Great Pacific Garbage Patch (containing 100,000,000kg of plastic) using ten systems based on System 03.” This was uploaded back on September 20, 2022 and does not contain any information of being a Chinese machine.

Following this, we conducted a reverse image search on various keyframes of the video and landed on the full footage. The full Youtube video uploaded on The Ocean Cleanup channel is titled : “The End of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch | The Ocean Cleanup”. The description states that they are “now transitioning to System 03, our first full-scale ocean cleanup system…to clean up the entire Great Pacific Garbage Patch for good” View a screenshot of this below –

Next, we checked The Ocean Cleanup’s official website for any information about Chinese machines or technology as claimed in the post. We learnt that Boyan Slat, a Dutch engineer, founded The Ocean Cleanup in 2013 in the Netherlands. Boyan achieved “Proof of Technology in 2021 for both river interception and cleanup of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.” All development, testing and operations are conducted by this Dutch non-profit organization whose “headquarters are in Rotterdam, the Netherlands,” with no proof of Chinese involvement. View a section of Slat’s story below –

In terms of System 03, the official website tells us that it “is a cleaning system which removes plastic from the ocean, designed, deployed and operated by The Ocean Cleanup.” It was deployed to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in August 2023 and uses “monitoring data and AI modeling to steer towards areas of highest density plastic” to remove it. System 03 is “ transported to the GPGP by two vessels – the Maersk Tender and the Maersk Trader” and it “currently reaches a maximum length of around 2.2 km.” View a section of this below –

Web searches for “Chinese ocean plastic cleanup machine” yield no matching results to the video shared in the claim. China has separate initiatives, such as the “Blue Circle” program that has won numerous awards. However, these are unrelated to the towed-barrier ocean cleanup technology by The Ocean Cleanup company.
Thus, the claim is a case of misrepresentation.
