First visual of former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina shows her crying after arriving in India; Fact Check

As Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country on August 5, 2024, several images of her appearing to wipe away tears have started making the rounds on social media. As of now, Hasina is at a safe house in India as confirmed by Indian External affairs minister S. Jaishankar in parliament.

In this context, the caption in the image of Hasina trying to wipe away her tears claimed that it was the first image of her after arriving in India. It reads: “Breaking: – 1st picture of Ex Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina after she reaches India after Coup by Bangladesh Army. Seen crying in this pic, she cud leave for London, UK soon. [sic].”

FACT CHECK

when Digiteye India team checked the image on Google Reverse Image Search, it appeared to be an old image from July 25, 2024 when Sheikh Hasina visited a vandalised metro station in Mirpur, Bangladesh. News reports confirm that Hasina visited the station after it was destroyed during the recent student agitation over quota reforms in public services.

It was also published in local newspaper Daily Sun. The report said Sheikh Hasina became emotional after seeing the destruction of the metro station and alleged that “conspirators were pulling the country back.” The image has also been published in the BBC, among other publications.

Hence, an unrelated image has been shared to claim as Sheikh Hasina seen crying after her arrival in India.

Conclusion: Misrepresentation — Old image of Hasina from July 25, 2024 while getting emotional after visiting a vandalised metro rail station has been shared as that of August 5, 2024 when she fled Bangladesh and arrived in India.
