Has Apple CEO Tim Cook announced his retirement from his role? Fact Check

Claim : Apple CEO Tim Cook is allegedly planning to step down from his role and retire soon.

Conclusion : The claim is false. There was no official announcement from Appple about Tim Cook’s retirement. Instead, Tim Cook has publicly addressed and denied it in a ‘Good Morning America’ interview in March 2026.

Several reports since the last few months have speculated that Apple CEO Tim Cook was going to step down from his position and retire. According to a report by Financial Times published in November 2025, Apple has “intensified preparations” for a leadership transition, with insiders suggesting Cook could step down “as soon as next year” and hardware chief John Ternus emerging as the most likely successor. This speculation gained fresh momentum in January 2026, with multiple media outlets including Business World and NewsBytes reporting on the developments, as detailed here and here respectively. 

FACT CHECK

DigitEYE India decided to investigate this claim and found that it is false. There has been no official announcement from Apple confirming Tim Cook’s retirement; in fact, he directly addressed and dismissed the speculation during a March 2026 interview on Good Morning America.

We first conducted a web search with the phrase “Apple CEO Tim Cook retirement announcement” to learn more. However, we did not find any official confirmation on Apple’s official forum or other discussion platforms. There has been no posts by Cook himself on his social media platforms pertaining to his retirement plans or him stepping down from his role.

Following this, we came across ABC’s Good Morning America interview with Tim Cook, titled : “Tim Cook talks Apple’s 50th anniversary, future of AI and privacy”. Cook responded to questions about retirement rumors, dismissing “speculation about stepping down, adding, “I love what I do deeply.” Reflecting on his twenty eight year journey with Apple, Cook says that “I walked into Apple and I’ve loved every day of it since…I can’t imagine life without Apple.” View a screenshot of this section below – 

The same Good Morning America interview with Tim Cook has been uploaded to their official Youtube channel on March 17, 2026. At 4:30 timestamp, the interviewer mentions that there have been reports where Cook having said that he wanted to “step back a little bit…” from his role of CEO. Responding to this, Cook says “I haven’t said that…there’s a rumour going around…I love what I do deeply.” 

DigitEYE India learnt that John Ternus is the senior vice president of hardware engineering, who joined Apple in 2001, reporting to CEO Tim Cook. He leads the company’s hardware engineering teams. According to a report by Times Now publishedon 8th February 2026 mentions Cook is “obsessed” with thinking about “who’s in the room five years from now, ten years from now,”.  While he framed recent executive exit as “a natural thing” tied to age and timing.

However, Tim Cook’s clarification in the Good Morning America interview confirms that he is not rushing to step down. Thus, any claim about his retirement or him stepping down from his role of Apple CEO is false.
