FACT CHECK
DigitEYE India decided to investigate this claim and discovered that these claims are false. While the TikTok website is accessible in India, the official app is still banned and users cannot access it.
In June 2020, following the deadly Galwan Valley clash that killed 20 Indian soldiers, India prohibited 59 Chinese apps, including TikTok under Section 69A of the IT Act. The move targeted apps allegedly misusing user data for espionage, essentially expanding the list to 200 apps.
However, according to a TOI report, the Indian government swiftly refuted the claims on August 23, 2025, stating, “The Government of India has not issued any unblocking order for TikTok. Any such statement or news is false and misleading.” View a snippet from the report below:
The ANI on 23 August 2025 had tweeted this, citing official Government sources which has been captured in the article. Find the tweet below –
A report by the Indian Express reported the statement of a TikTok spokesperson to TechCrunch in an email statement. It read : “We have not restored access to TikTok in India and continue to comply with the Government of India’s directive,” Moreover a senior IT Ministry official confirmed the ban under IT Act provisions persists observing how ‘the government hasn’t “unblocked or done anything” regarding TikTok.’ View a snippet from the report below –
Thus, the claim is false and TikTok has not been unbanned in India. Official Government sources and statements affirm that the app is still banned.
