FACT CHECK
DigitEYE India decided to debunk this false claim by analyzing the official RBI Financial Stability Report of June 2025. The ₹4.8 lakh figure refers to the average outstanding debt per borrower, not per citizen. According to the RBI Financial Stability Report June 2025, “the average debt per individual borrower increased from ₹3.9 lakh to ₹4.8 lakh” between March 2023 and March 2025. This excludes individuals who have not taken any loans.

The ₹90,000 increase is accurate only for borrowers and not every Indian citizen that the fake Youtube short claims. It reflects the increase in average debt per borrower, not per capita debt for all Indians.
The Economic Times in their article here has also affirmed that the ₹4.8 lakh figure is not for all citizens.
Thus, the 23% increase is accurate but it applies only to the verage of those with outstanding loans. The clarification of “per capita debt of borrowers” is of utmost importance here. Hence, the claim is false.
