Details:
We first conducted a web search with the phrase “Delhi to be renamed as Indraprastha” to learn more about the issue. According to a report by Hindustan Times on October 19, 2025, the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) proposed the rename in a letter to Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra. The report said: The letter mentions that “City names mirror a nation’s consciousness, can be associated with its ancient history and culture. “When we say Delhi, we only see a period of 2,000 years. But when we say Indraprastha, we connect with a glorious history spanning 5,000 years,” View a section from the report below –

Following this, we came across another report by Times of India published on November 1, 2025. As per the report, MP Praveen Khandelwal wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah urging the rename to honor ancient heritage. He also suggested renaming Old Delhi Railway Station to ‘Indraprastha Junction’ and Indira Gandhi International Airport to ‘Indraprastha International Airport’. However, regarding the proposal to rename Delhi to Indraprastha, no official government response has been identified. An Economic Times report has put forward the view of historians and how “such a move risks flattening Delhi’s multi-layered history into a single narrative.” Back in 2022, similar calls to rename Delhi to Indraprastha was made by Swami Chakrapani of the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha, but these also went unaddressed as per a National Herald report.
There has been no comment or any official notification from the Government of India. Thus, the claim is false.
