Following the tragic incident in Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh, where initially 116 people were reported to have been killed in a stampede, several videos have been shared on social media.

The gathering of over one lakh people for a Satsang event of Bhole Bhaba on July 2, 2024, turned out uncontrollable leading to stampede and loss of lives. A judicial probe has been ordered into the incident.

Amid the tragic incident, social media is buzzing with several videos with a caption that reads: “At least 116 people, mostly women, lost their lives in a stampede during a religious event in Hathras district, Uttar Pradesh.”

FACT-CHECK

When we conducted a Google Reverse Image Search on a couple of key visuals from the video, the results showed that it was an old video from Mathura when a stampede took place ahead of Holi. News reports confirmed that the stampede broke out in at a pre-Holi event on March 17, 2024 by NDTV.

The UP Police, however, refuted reports of stampede in Mathura but said that there was no stampede-like situation as adequate arrangements were made.

News reports confirmed that at least six people fell unconscious at the event that took place at Radha Rani temple that took place on March 17, 2024 in Mathura’s Barsana area, as part of the Holi. Hence, the video in the claim is not from Hathras but from Mathura.
