Old video clip shows Rahul Gandhi saying use petrol to kickstart Indian economy; Fact Check

A brief video clip showing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi giving some irrelevant talk on petrol and kickstarting the Indian economy.

It was being shared with a claim in Hindithat said: “मुझे तो राहुल गांधी के भाषण का इसलिए इंतजार रहता है क्यूँकि जब भी बंदा बोलता है, कच्चा मसाला मिलता है पोस्ट करने को.. ‘अब पेट्रोल से ट्रैक्टर-ट्रक चलाएंगे राहुल बाबा’ यह काम सिर्फ राहुल बाबा ही कर सकते हैं जब आटा लीटर में दे सकते हैं तो ट्रैक्टर-ट्रक को पेट्रोल डालकर चला भी सकते हैं” [English translation:I wait for Rahul Gandhi’s speech because whenever the man speaks, I get raw masala to post.. ‘Ab petrol with tractor-truck Rahul Baba’ This work can be done only by Rahul Baba if he can give flour in litres, you can drive tractor-truck by putting petrol in it.]

It was shared widely on Facebook and Twitter.

FACT CHECK

Owing to the irrelevant reference made in the 14-sec vido clip, Digiteye India took it up for fact checking. Taking some key frames from the video, we ran a Reverse Image Search and found that the original video from the official handle of the Indian National Congress, on April 20, 2019 actually had the full speech of Rahul Gandhi.

See the video here. The speech was made by Rahul Gandhi at a public meeting in Bhilai, Chhattisgarh. Uploaded on April 20, 2019 during the General Elections, Rahul Gandhi was speaking about the advantages of NYAY Yojna, the minimum wage support programme of the INC, to give a jumpstart to the Indian economy.

This is when he used the analogy of petrol and an engine but it was clipped to show out of context to make fun of Rahul Gandhi.

Claim: Rahul Gandhi claimed to use petrol to kickstart Indian economy
Conclusion: Election speech has been clipped to show it irrelevantly
Rating: Misrepresentation —
