Old video of policeman slapping woman farmer in Punjab resurfaces; Fact Check

A video showing a policeman raising his hand at a woman farmer is going viral on social media after the police action on protesting farmers sitting on the Punjab-Haryana National Highway connecting the Shambhu border with Khanouri border.

The context was when the Punjab Police started removing the farmers sitting on the protest at Shambhu border demanding the guarantee of Minimum Support Price (MSP), which has been going on for over a year. The clash between farmers and police erupted when bulldozers moved in  to remove the tents of the farmers.

A Facebook user shared the video and wrote, ‘Kejriwal’s Punjab Police giving MSP to the female farmer, but the dictator is Modi ji, brother’.

 

This video is being shared as shown below on social media platform X.

FACT CHECK

The Digiteye India team first searched for the original video taking keframes and conducting a Google Reverse Image Search. The results showed that the X user’s video was uploaded on May 18, 2023 and not recently.

As per the caption, farmers were protesting against land acquisition in Gurdaspur district of Punjab, during which a Punjab Police constable slapped the female farmer, which was condemned as seen below:

Claim: Kejriwal’s police in Punjab slapped a protesting woman farmer for MSP.

Conclusion: Misrepresentation. The video from 2023 is an old protest over land acquisition for a highway.
