Unrelated video claims attack on AAP’s Swati Maliwal inside Delhi CM Office; Fact Check

As Aam Aadmi Party MP Swati Maliwal hit headlines after the alleged attack on her on the morning of May 13, 2024 at the Delhi CM’s residence, several posts have been shared on social media with an accompanying video purportedly showing a scuffle between a man and two women inside the office.

The claim says that the video shows how AAP Member of Parliament and former chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), Swati Maliwal, is being assaulted inside the Delhi Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) by Bibhav Kumar, an assistant to CM Arvind Kejriwal.

[Translated into English, it reads: This was bound to happen. Swati Maliwal has been beaten up. Kejriwal’s PA did that. News is coming in that CMO is being kicked and punched . Reason: It is being said that Swati Maliwal, Marlona and Sanjay, everyone wants to become CM.]”

FACT-CHECK

Digiteye India conducted a fact-check regarding the video purportedly showing the incident, which was confirmed by another AAP leader Sanjay Singh the next day. However, the woman in the video did not resemble Swati Maliwal, raising suspicion. By examining key frames and conducting a Google Reverse Image Search, we found that the video actually corresponded to an unrelated incident that took place at the Tis Hazari Court Mediation Center in Delhi. The incident was reported by various sources and the video was uploaded by Lokmat News and also shared on social media as seen below.

Thus, the video accompanying the claim alleging assault on Swati Maliwal inside the Delhi Chief Minister’s Office is false. It actually depicts an unrelated incident at the Tis Hazari Court Mediation Center in Delhi, not the alleged assault on Maliwal as claimed.

Hence, the video accompanying the claim is false.

Claim: Video shows AAP MP Swati Maliwal being assaulted inside the Delhi Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) by an aide to CM.

Conclusion: The video used in the claim is false. It’s an unrelated video of an altercation at Tis Hazari Court Mediation Center in Delhi and not of Swati Maliwal being assaulted by Kejriwal’s aide at Delhi CMO.
