Scary Earth moving video captured after recent Indonesia Quake? Fact Check

A scary satellite video showing large land mass being shifted during an earthquake is going viral with claims that the clip shows recent footage of an earthquake in Indonesia on Nov.22, 2022.

The satellite footage shows a landscape shifting, giving way and pushing away infrastructure. The claim reads: “Satellite video of the Indonesian earthquake. The entire land mass is getting shifted.”

This has gone viral as a 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia’s West Java on Nov. 22, killing at least 268 people.

FACT CHECK

When we searched for the video on Youtube, we found that the video footage was old and was captured when an earthquake of 7.5 magnitude hit Indonesian island of Sulawesi on Sept 28, 2018. See the original video here:

The resultant liquefaction during the earthquake boiled the ground, turning soil to liquid, said a report in Reuters and at least 1,600 died in the disaster. The image by DigitalGlobe, a Maxar company was taken in 2018 and it was carried by BBC as well.
