Is Tata Motors giving out gifts for the success of G20 summit in Delhi? Fact Check

The G20 summit that was held in Delhi on September 9-10 was a huge success. However, multiple false claims shared by people about the event are doing rounds on social media. One such claim that is going viral states that Tata Motors is giving out free gifts to people for the success of the G20 summit.

The viral claim is doing rounds on social media and on WhatsApp. The claim includes a link to a website where people have to enter their personal details and share the link on WhatsApp groups in order to be eligible for the free gift.

Digiteye India received a WhatsApp request to fact check this claim.

FACT CHECK

We checked the social media handles of Tata Motors to see if they have announced any such scheme for its customers. We also checked news articles to see if any such giveaway was hosted by Tata Motors or any other company. There was no result on Google for any such contest.

We checked further and found out that the link attached to the claim is not from Tata Motors (tatamotors.com) but rather from a different website that looked a case of phishing. The claim has been shared many times on social media but with a different link every time.

On checking further, we came across this post by Tata Motors Cars on Twitter where they have issued a statement and refuted these claims.

They said, “Please note that Tata Motors has not announced any such contest and categorically denies any association with such schemes. We strongly suggest that such fraudulent messages should not spread further on social media and be deleted immediately. Please refrain from clicking or engaging with such links/messages.”

Their statement also adds, “Kindly note, that any official contest/ announcement from Tata Motors will be and is always announced directly on our official website/social media handle, for easy verification in the future.”

We contacted a software developer based in Bangalore to find out more details. Vivek Asthana said, “These links are classic cases of phishing. Users need to be aware of where they put in their personal data because it can be manipulated and be used for cases of fraud.” Hence, the claim is totally false.

CLAIM: Tata Motors is offering gifts for the success of the G20 summit.

CONCLUSION: Tata Motors has issued a statement where they have said that they have not started any such scheme or giveaway.

RATING: Totally False — Five rating
