Did Indian Army Chief offer condolences for Sonam Wangchuk in this video? Fact Check

Claim: Viral video shows Indian Army Chief Gen. Upendra Dwivedi offered condolences for Sonam Wangchuk’s custodial death.

Conclusion: The claim is false. The audio is altered using AI and the authentic footage does not speak about Wangchuk’s death as no credible reports indicate his death. The video is a deepfake.

Several social media accounts are spreading a viral clip of Indian Army Chief Gen. Upendra Dwivedi who is allegedly speaking about Sonam Wangchuk’s death. X user ‘Mushk_0’ shared such a post with the caption : “Following the custodial death of Sonam Wangchuk, Indian Army chief Gen. Upendra Dwivedi offered condolences, now being suppressed by media. Even the Army seems exhausted by Hindutva fascists forcing their own agenda.” View the post below: 

We first watched the video and noted the statement made by him as follows: “I express my deep regret at the passing of Sonam Wangchuk while he was in state custody. His death has caused understandable concern among citizens across Ladakh and the rest of the country. As Chief of General Staff, I extend my condolences to his family and to all who knew him… Every life lost under detention demands clarity and accountability. I have requested the central government to conduct a thorough and transparent inquiry. All facts must be verified so that confidence in our institutions remains intact. May his family find strength during this difficult time.”

FACT CHECK

DigitEYE India decided to investigate this claim and found that it is false. Indian Army Chief Gen. Upendra Dwivedi did not say anything on Wangchuk’s death. There are no reports by credible media houses that support the claim.

When we conducted a web search with various phrases from the content above to find any reports, none of the media outlets have written about this nor is Indian Army Chief Gen. Upendra Dwivedi linked to this incident in any manner. 

Next, we conducted a reverse image search upon seeing the WION logo to get the authentic footage. The original video is from 27th November, 2025 titled: “Operation Sindoor: Indian Army Chief Upendra Dwivedi Reveals How India OUTSMARTED Pakistan | Original.” The visuals match the alleged claim footage with the original video, which can be seen here(Video Courtesy: WION)

PIB fact checking unit has also debunked this claim as fake and posted it on their X account as seen below:

His remarks highlighted the broader geopolitical context in which nations are reassessing deterrence, preparedness and long-term military transformation. The address comes at a time when global conflict trends and national security debates continue to shape India’s defence outlook amid ‘over 50 ongoing conflicts’
