Does this video really show Michael Jackson being held at gunpoint during Earth song? Fact Check

Claim : Video purportedly shows Michael Jackson being held at a gunpoint during an Earth Song performance.

Conclusion : The claim is false. The scene was a deliberate, fully choreographed theatrical element in the Earth Song finale, designed to symbolize the song’s anti-war and peace message. It was a pre-planned stagecraft repeated across shows, not a real threat.

Rating : False Five rating

FACT CHECK

DigitEYE India decided to investigate this claim and found it to be false. The moment was not spontaneous but a carefully staged part of the Earth Song , created to reinforce its themes of peace and opposition to violence. It was a planned performance element used consistently across shows, and no indication of any real danger.

Details:

From the Wikipedia page, we learnt that Earth Song’s musical video “had an environmental theme, showing images of animal cruelty, deforestation, pollution, poaching, poverty and war. Jackson and the world’s people unite in a spiritual chant”.

Upon conducting a reverse image search from various keyframes of the video, we landed on the full Youtube video. The video is titled : “Michael Jackson – Earth Song – Live [HD/720p]” and the person points the gun at 8:55 mark as a part of the act. Jackson then lowers the gun at 9:02, the soldier starts crying and a little girl walks forward with a sunflower at 9:32.

We then conducted a web search with the phrase “Michael Jackson held at gunpoint during Earth song” to learn more. The search took us to KnowYourMeme where we learnt that this “video was taken in mid-1997 in Copenhagen, Denmark during Jackson’s HIStory World Tour.” Jackson was performing the “Earth Song” and the “lowering the gun” gesture was symbolic of an end to war.” View a screenshot of this below –

Following this, we came across another version of the Earth song whose full video was uploaded on Youtube, titled : Michael Jackson – Earth Song (Live HIStory Tour In Copenhagen) (Remastered)”. At the 8:20 mark, Jackson puts down the soldier’s gun and a little girl walks forward with a sunflower. The same clip was shown in the claimed video and it was all a part of the performance, no real incident of Jackson being held at gunpoint took place.

Lastly, we came across information about the person who played the role of the soldier, whose actual name is Cris Judd. From Azquotes, we got his quote : On `Earth Song’ I was the military guy that would come out of a tank that was used during the show. It was unbelievable; somehow I’d become a Michael Jackson fan that got to dance with Michael Jackson! I spent a lot of time wondering, “what the hell did I do right to deserve this?”

Furthermore, the genuine stage prop, an AR-15 A2 replica with Colt firearms stamp and black strap was auctioned by Julien’s Auctions as seen below. It was never a functional weapon and the prop was used “ in multiple performances during Jackson’s 1996 HIStory World Tour.” View a screenshot of this below –

It was only a scripted scene with a fake gun.

Thus, the claim is false.
