Video depicts self-deported Ranjani Srinivasan raising ‘Azadi’ slogans in US; Fact Check

Amid the controversy over self-deported Indian PhD scholar of Columbia University Ranjani Srinivasan, a video depicting a sloganeering woman supporting the Palestine cause at a rally is being shared widely on social media. The claim says that the woman is Ranjani Srinivasan and that she is chanting “azadi” slogans and was deported. See the claims:

Shared by an X user PallaviCT, the claim stated:”This is Ranjani Srinivasan, PhD scholar at Columbia Univ,USA. Her visa was revoked becoz of her Azadi for Palestine slogans. Now will Stalin & Vijay support this Tamilian 4 her political stand or berat her 4 sloganeering in Hindi? Catch 22 situation?”

Another X user wrote: “Remember this moment? Liberals at Columbia University raised Azaadi slogans for Kashmir and Palestine. Now these wokes are being kicked out of USA. Don’t have one second of sympathy for these people. Celebrate this moment.”

The video has been shared by many here and here.

FACT CHECK

After receiving a WhatsApp query, we checked for the real image of Ranjani Srinivasan and found that the video features a woman whose face entirely different. Check the two images here:

And the video shared by Al Jazeera on their X platform was uploaded on April 23, 2024 depicting the rally held on April 19, 2024 at Columbia University campus describing the word Azadi as a Urdu word.

However, looking for Ranjani Srinivasan’s presence at the rally, we checked news reports which revealed that she was in India during this period and not in the US when pro-Palestine protests broke out.

Hence, the claim is false.

Claim: Video shows self-deported scholar Ranjani Srinivasan sloganeering at Columbia University.

Conclusion: Misrepresentation. The woman in video is someone else and not Ranjani Srinivasan, who happened to be in India when the video was made and uploaded.

Rating: Misrepresentation —
