Every year, Mumbai is flooded after the city receives heavy rains, with images and videos showing several roads and residential areas submerged in water. Amid this, a video of the iconic Gateway of India is being shared showing it flooded with sea waves hitting the iconic monument. See the video being shared on X below:

The claim says, “Heavy Rainfall at Gateway of India, ” which shows the date as July 22, 2024. The same video was shared on X on July 27, 2024 with a caption that said, “Land at sea level same. The video is of Tajmahal hotel, Gateway of india, Mumbai.”

FACT-CHECK

When Digiteye India received a request to fact-check the claim, we took it up. A simple search of a key frame showing waves hitting Gateway Of India on Google Reverse Image Search showed that the video was an old one shared in May 2021, when Mumbai received heavy rains from Cyclone Tauktae. It was shared on Twitter on May 18, 2021.

The news reports also confirm that the video was pertaining to the Cyclone-hit Mumbai in May 2021. Hence, the video showing Gateway of India flooded now after the city received heavy rains last week from July 21 to 27, 2024 is false.
