Did Chinese troops say ‘Jai Shri Ram’ after de-escalation in border? Fact Check

Following India and China signing a border tension de-escalation pact, the process of disengagement started in eastern Ladakh on Friday, October 25, 2024.

Coinciding with it, several images have appeared on social media showing Indian soldiers reportedly retreating from the Actual Line of Control to the west of the Charding Nala, while images of China’s People’s Liberation Army returning after removing their tents.

Amid these developments, a video is being shared on social media showing apparently troops of both India and China chanting together “Jai Shri Ram,” and some Indian soldiers teaching their Chinese counterparts on how to say “Jai Shri Ram.”

See the video here:

The caption reads: “Chinese soldiers saying “Jai Shri Ram”. Another tweet’s caption of the same video reads:”No fan of #IndianArmy will pass without liking this tweet ♥️ Chinese soldiers saying, “Jai Shri Ram” — Jai Hind.”

FACT-CHECK

When Digiteye India received a request on WhatsApp, the team took it up for scrutiny as it has generated wider interest already on social media. Taking some key frames from the video and conducting a Google Reverse Image Search revealed that the original video was an old one from January 2024 and not recent, as claimed. See the original video:

The same was shared on Facebook on January 22, 2024, with no reference to the present day’s developments.

Hence, the original video went viral on social media coinciding with the consecration ceremony of Ayodhya’s Ram Mandir on January 22, 2024. And, both Chinese and Indian troops were engaged in a standoff then along the Line of Actual Control.

Another X post on January 22 geolocated the video to the Chepzi-Chumar border area in southern Ladakh, based on features and the mountains in the background as seen on Google Earth.

Hence, the video is not from the recent disengagement process between India and China.

Claim: Chinese soldiers seen in a video saying “Jai Shri Ram”.

Conclusion: Misrepresentation — An old unrelated video is being shared as recent one from the disengagement process between India and China.

Rating: Misrepresentation —
