Video showing fireworks on last day of Maha Kumbh Mela goes viral; Fact Check

A video showing people sitting on boats enjoying fireworks is being shared on social media platforms with users linking it to the recently concluded 2025 Maha Kumbh Mela.

The caption reads: “Iconic Scenes marking the end of Mahakumbh which United more than 66 Cr 21 Lakh Hindus. Thank you @myogiadityanath for all you have done for Sanatana Dharma.”

Another post shared similar clip with a caption in Hindi that said: “जीवन का पहला एवं आखिरी महाकुम्भ” (Translated, it reads, ‘Life’s first and last Maha Kumbh’). The clipping of fireworks was shared  by many here and here.

FACT-CHECK

Taking a few key images of the video, conducting a Google Reverse Image Search showed that original visuals were posted on YouTube three months ago, to be precise, on 15 November 2024 with a caption showing the location as Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. A news report in Mint has also carried the news here.

It revealed that grand fireworks were seen on the sky on River Ganga’s ghats on the occasion of Dev Deepawali, where people gather on boats to watch the fireworks.

YouTube also threw up the video on the occasion of Dev Deepawali as seen here with a title that said, “India’s Biggest Firework || Dev Deepavali 2024.”

Since the event was in November 2024, which is older than the Maha Kumbh Mela that concluded on February 26, 2025, the claim is misrepresentation.

Claim: Fireworks clipping claims it was during the concluding session of Maha Kumbh Mela in Varanasi held in February.

Conclusion: The video was an old one from November 2024 and not related to the recent Maha Kumbh Mela held in Varanasi.

Rating: Misrepresentation —
