FACT CHECK

DigitEYE India decided to investigate this claim and discovered that the claim is misleading. India Post is not shutting down its registered post services rather merging it with Speed Post for efficiency.

We first conducted a keyword search with the phrases “India Post shutdown” and “India Post registered post shutdown” to learn about the subject. We came across an official X post by India Post on X where they have debunked this claim.  View the post below –

Posted on 7 August 2025, they have explained the benefits of this merge with Speed Post in a thread format. The post always mentions what says the same and that there will be “no compromise on trust, just quicker outcomes”.

A report by the Business Standard sheds light on why this partnership happened in the first place. Registered post, a secure, addressee-specific service with legal validity, has indeed seen declining usage, dropping 25% from 244.4 million items in 2011-12 to 184.6 million in 2019-20, per official data. This decline, accelerated by digital alternatives and private couriers, prompted reforms.

The PIB fact check unit has also published an official press release on 6 August 2025, debunking this viral claim. The press release confirmed that “ the Department of Posts has rationalized its sorting infrastructure and unified the processing of both Registered and Speed Post items. This integration will enhance backend efficiency, reduce transit delays, and offer better connectivity across the network.”  View a snippet from the press release below .

Thus, the claim is misleading. India Post’s service Registered Post is not getting discontinued rather it is being integrated with Speed Post.
