Social media users have claimed that Lady Gaga stabbed herself with her own nail and was bleeding during the 2099 MTV VMA performance. Verified X user ‘sikocyan’ shared such a claim with the caption (translated into English) : “At the 2009 VMAs, Lady Gaga had a contraption/mechanism rigged into her outfit so that, at a specific part in the song, she could stab her chest with a nail to make blood flow out. In other words, that blood was really her own….”

DigitEYE India decided to investigate this claim and found it to be false. The red liquid seen during the performance was stage blood used as part of the planned act. Lady Gaga continued with the routine as intended and there is no credible evidence that she injured herself with a nail or used her own blood.

We first conducted a reverse image search on various keyframes of the video to check if the caption is correct or not. The search took us to a Youtube video uploaded by MTV, titled : “Lady Gaga Performs “Paparazzi” | 2009 VMAs”. The description and title both confirm that this was an actual performance from 2009. Having confirmed this, we conducted a web search with the phrase “Lady Gaga 2009 MTV VMA blood” to learn more. A report published by The Mirror on September 15, 2009 clearly states in its title that “Lady GaGa covers herself in fake blood” during the performance. The report mentions that “she faked her own suicide, dangling from a rope while fake blood spurted” from her. View a section from the report below –
Following this, we came across another 2009 report by UPI that confirmed Gaga “wore a white costume with fake blood oozing down the front as she sang her hit song.” The report observes how “Gaga, covered in fake blood, played dead during a performance of her song” at the MTV Video Music Awards. Next, we searched for Lady Gaga’s own comments on her performance to learn more about the act. As written in a report by Billboard, Gaga in her 2017 documentary ‘Gaga: Five Foot Two’ explained the intent as “bleeding to death” to highlight “what fame did to Marilyn Monroe” and Anna Nicole Smith. Lastly, we did not find any reports of any real injury or self stabbing by Lady Gaga by her own nail or anything like that. There are no official reports about how Gaga triggered the blood but some users on Reddit speculate that it was remote operated.
