Old Indonesian video of boys kicking a hijab-wearing girl in class passed off as in India; Fact Check

A video is going viral depicting a classroom where some boys are bullying and kicking a girl wearing hijab. The clip is going viral with a caption that is communal, depicting the boys as Hindus and the victim as a Muslim girl. See the post on X here:

The caption reads in Hindi: “ये किसी कॉलेज का वीडियो है , और ये ऐसा कॉलेज है जहां हिंदू लड़के लड़कियां साथ पढ़ाई करते हैं, यहां देखिए हिजाब वाली लड़कियों के साथ कैसा बर्ताओ करता है संघी मानसिकता वाले लड़के , किया अब भी आप अपनी बहन बेटी का एडमिशन ऐसे कॉलेज में करना पसंद करेंगे जहां हिंदू लड़के लड़कियां साथ पढ़ाई करते हैं.” [Translated version in English: This is a video of a college, where Hindu boys and girls study together… See here how boys with Sanghi mentality behave with girls wearing hijab… Would you still like to admit your sister and daughter to a college where Hindu boys and girls study together?]

FACT CHECK

When Digiteye India team received a request for fact check , we took out some frames and checked them using Google Reverse Image Search. The results showed a similar video uploaded on an Indonesian news outlet DetikNews on February 13, 2020. The translated headline reads: “Current Condition of Middle School Student Victim of Bullying in Purworejo, She Was Hit and Kicked by 3 Students in Class.”

 

As per the report, the incident took place at Muhammadiyah Need Middle School in Purworejo. a town in Java, Indonesia and the authorities had asked the Head of the Central Java Provincial Government Service to come to Purworejo and meet the victim’s parents. The students in the video were charged under the country’s Child Protection Act. The story never mentioned whether the boys were Hindus or Muslims. The video has nothing to do with India nor with the communal angle being attributed to it. Hence, the claim is FALSE.
