Old video surfaces claiming Hezbollah (Lebanon) waging full-scale war against Israel; Fact Check

Amid huge confusion over the Israeli-Hamas conflict, several new twists and tweaks are appearing on social media, blaming either of the parties. One such video is making rounds claiming that the Hezbollah launched rockets from Lebanon directed towards Israel to start a full-scale war. It further supports the claim that Hamas group is a hands-in-glove for the Arab countries to take on Israel heads on.

The caption reads: “Hezbollah (Lebanon) is going full-scale war against The State of Israel. Hamas was just a puppet, Arab wanted to start war with Israel. Iran is very much keen to join Israel-Hamas war. ITS CLEAR NOW. IT IS A GREAT CONSPIRACY AGAINST ISRAEL”.

Iran-backed Hezbollah have been engaged in conflict with Israel since 1982 from Lebanon, as reported by Reuters. They are exchanging fire with Israeli forces across the border since its Palestinian ally Hamas in Gaza and Israel went to war on Oct. 7. In fact, the violence on the frontier between Israel and Lebanon is the deadliest escalation since a major war in 2006, reports Reuters.

FACT CHECK

When Digiteye India team checked the veracity of the viral video as it was not shown by any major news outlet. When key frames of the video were taken and checked on Google Reverse Image Search, the results showed us that the video was from an old report from Stargate, a Turkish news website uploaded on January 20, 2018.

The translated news article reads: “TSK started hitting PYD targets in Afrin”, referring to the Turkish attack on Kurdish targets in Afrin, Syria. The video can be seen here alongwith Turkish news coverage on the same.

Hence, a wrong video was used to claim that it was the latest from Israel-Hezbollah (Lebanon) clahses.

Claim: Viral video shows Hezbollah (Lebanon) attacks on Israel claiming a full-fledged war between the two now.

Conclusion: Old 2018 video clip showing Turkish attacks on Kurdish targets in Afrin was tweaked. False.

Rating: Misrepresentation —
