Video of Iftar party on highway is not from Kolkata but from Karnataka; Fact Check

A video of seating made for an iftar party on a road is making the rounds with a claim that it was held in Kolkata, West Bengal. The Iftar party is held after sunset by Muslims to break their fast during the month of Ramzan.

The same video has been shared in Hindi on FaceBook here:

The video above shows the road filled with chairs and tables for the iftar party while auto rickshaws are seen nearby. The caption in Bengali, when translated reads:”After Namaz by blocking the road in Calcutta ,West Bengal India ,having Iftar party on the road. The TMC ruling party allow this but Hindus are marginalised ,& can’t speak Jay Shree Ram”.

The caption in Facebook post in Hindi reads: “सडक पर नमाज़ के बाद पेश है सडक पर इफ्तार पार्टी* ।। वीडियो पश्चिम बंगाल के कोलकाता से है।। क्या यह सही है ?” [translated into English, it reads: “After offering namaz on the streets, here’s presenting iftar party on the streets from Kolkata, West Bengal. FACT-CHECK

When we received a query on WhatsApp, we took some key frames and checked on Google Reverse Image Search for the original image. The results showed that the video is from Mudipu Junction in Mangaluru, Karnataka. Further search revealed that it was reported on Kannada TV news channels such as Zee Kannada here.

As per the news report, the iftar party was organised on March 30, 2024. Other reports said that the event went on for four hours, thus blocking the highway. Consequently, the organiser of the event, Abubakar Siddique from Auto Rajakanmar, had reportedly received a notice from the Election Commission for violating the Model Code of Conduct during the elections.

Hence, the claim that the event was from Kolkata, West Bengal is false.

Claim: Video shows a huge Iftar party being held in Kolkata, West Bengal.

Conclusion: False, the video is from Mudipu in Mangalore, Karnataka.
