FACT CHECK

DigitEYE India decided to investigate this claim and found it to be false. The footage is from a Japanese McDonald’s commercial released in the 2000s and features Hungarian model Ágota Varga, not Taylor Swift. No reliable evidence has been found linking Swift to the advertisement or confirming that she appeared in it.

Details:

We first conducted a web search with the phrase “Taylor Swift 2006 Japan McDonald’s advertisement” to learn more. Born December 13, 1989, Swift was 16 years old when she released her debut album ‘Taylor Swift’ on October 24, 2006. No credible records or official statements link her to any McDonald’s campaign in Japan or anywhere else.

Following this, we conducted a reverse image search from various keyframes of the video in the claim. The search took us to a Youtube video uploaded on 15 May 2006, titled : “Japanese McDonald’s Ad” and stated it was part of the “Tomato McGrand” campaign.

While browsing through the comment section of the video, one user dropped a hint that the model featured is not Taylor Swift but Agota Varga. View a screenshot of the comment below –

Other searches also took us to an article by Watch Mojo which is titled : “Top 20 Weirdest McDonald’s Commercials.” At number 3, the article clearly states that “Sporting red hair, Hungarian model Agota Varga stars in this Japanese commercial for the Tomato McGrand. Her costumes, which were designed by Yohji Yamamoto, clearly resemble Ronald McDonald’s wardrobe.” While there is no picture attached, the description with the red hair clearly resembles her appearance –

Another report by Starcasm addresses the mistaken identity and writes “One of our awesome Twitter followers helped answer our burning questions by saying the real star is Hungarian model Agota Varga.” Similarly, an article by Foodbeast uses the commercial video and names her by observing “That’s Agota Varga as the face of the Tomato McGrand…” View a screenshot of this below –

Thus, the claim is false.
