Are protesting farmers drinking alcohol behind cameras? Unrelated video goes viral; Fact Check

A video is making the rounds on social media showing alcohol being distributed to farmers who were at Delhi borders seeking to enter the capital and hold protests for MSP (Minimum Support Price) for their produce. The video was shared on X (formerly Twitter) with a caption: “On Camera – Emotional Blackmail that we are ‘Anndata’. Behind Cameras REALITY- Enjoying ALCOHOL Daru Langars at ‘Protest’.”

It has been widely reposted here and here.

FACT CHECK

The Digiteye India team ran the Invid tool to get some key frames of the video and checked them on Google Reverse Image Search. The results showed that it was an old video from an event in Ludhiana’s Kaunke Kalan village where alcohol is traditionally distributed during an annual event at the Baba Rodu Shah Dargah. More information on this event is available from this news clip from Daily News Punjab:

The same video with a similar claim was shared on Facebook on Sept. 7, 2021, alleging Kisan Mahapanchayat as frauds:

Hence, the video is not related to farmers’ protest in 2024 but from the mela Mela Baba Rodu Shah Ji, that is organised in Kaunke Kalan every year.

Claim: Behind cameras, farmers at protest in Delhi border are enjoying (ALCOHOL) Daru Langars.
Conclusion: False, the video was from September 2021 related to the mela Mela Baba Rodu Shah Ji, organised in Kaunke Kalan village of Punjab every year, not from Farmers Protest 2024.
