Did America open world’s largest library in Ambedkar’s name? Fact Check

According to a post being shared on social media, the United States has opened the largest library in the world and named it after the author of the Indian Constitution, Dr B.R. Ambedkar.

“भारत देश के मसीहा डॉ .भीम राव अम्बेदकर जी के नाम अमेरिका ने खोलाविश्व का सबसे बडा पुस्तकालय , नमस्ते अमेरिका , जय भीम, जय भारत, जय संविधान.”[Translated into English, it reads: The United States has opened the world’s largest library and named it after the author of the Indian Constitution, Dr B.R. Ambedkar. Namaste America, Jai Bheem, Jai Bharat, Jai Constitution.]

To support the claim, the message also shows a white building with several books stacked on shelves.

Fact Check

Digiteye India took it up as a similar claim was debunked in the past. When we searched on google Reverse Image Search using the image of the white building, we came across the original building being located not in the US but in China. The building belongs to Binhai Library in Tianjin, China. Several news reports (CNN) reveal the same information as seen below:

Other reports confirmed that the Tianjin Binhai Library is MVRDV’s fastest-constructed project, taking just three years. See the video below from Xinhua news agency:

Uploaded on Nov 2, 2017, the above video gives out details of the Tianjin Binhai Library, which was opened in the northern Chinese port city of Tianjin that has a one-of-its-kind experience with books.

Hence, the claim is totally false. There is no such library in the United States named after Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. No reports pertaining to this idea could be traced, either.

Claim: A library in the United States has been opened and named after Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

Conclusion: No such library has been opened and is certainly not named after Ambedkar, as claimed. The image was that of a library in China that was opened in March 2018.

Rating: Totally False — Five rating
