Did Pakistan PM announce move to counter India’s CAA implementation? Fact Check

An image of a post on social media in the name of Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is being shared after India announced the implementation of Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) on March 11, 2024. The post on x (formerly twitter) claims that Sharif is also announcing a Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) in Pakistan to allow Indian Muslims “who feel persecuted in India” to get Pakistani citizenship.

See the post here:

The context was India on March 11, 2024 announced CAA implementation for those who returned from Pakistan and Afghanistan before 2014 to get Indian citizenship. The post in the name of Sharif was made to look like a counter move by Pakistan. You can reactions to the tweet here and here.

FACT CHECK

When Digiteye India team checked for Sharif’s official Twitter account, there was no such post. Secondly, using the Social Blade, we checked if there are any deleted post in his account but found none. See the search results here:

As per the records, Sherif’s last post was made on March 10, 2024, whereas the above claim in a Twitter post was made on March 11, 2024. Social Blade shows no deleted posts either on March 10 or March 11 as seen below:

Next, our search on newspaper for any relevant news report proved futile as there was no such announcement made by Sharif. Hence, a wrong claim was made in the name of Pakistan PM Sharif.

Claim: Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif is also announcing a CAA to allow Indian Muslims “who feel persecuted in India” to get Pakistani citizenship.

Conclusion: False. There is no such announcement and no tweet made by Pakistan PM.
