Several social media users have shared a clip, claiming that it showcases a TMC woman leader making threats against people who vote for BJP. X user ‘jpsin’ shared such a post with the caption (translated into English) : A TMC woman leader has warned the residents of a locality that if even a single vote goes to the BJP or if anyone hoists the BJP flag, she will set everything ablaze. She will set everything on fire, she will set the entire basti on fire. All the seculars and Bengal police are silent on this.” The post gained more than 30,000 views and can be seen below –

In the video, the lady can be heard saying in Bengali that whoever votes for the official BJP candidate, she will burn the flags and beat them.

FACT CHECK

DigitEYE India decided to investigate this claim and found it to be false. The video is 4 years old and has no connection to a TMC leader. It actually dates back to February 2022 and shows former BJP leader Baby Koley issuing threats towards an official candidate from her own party during local municipal polls.

Details:

We first conducted a reverse image search on various keyframes of the video to learn about the origin and context. The search took us to a Youtube video uploaded by ABP Ananda on 8 February 2022, titled (translated into English) : “BJP Leader Agitation:”If you vote for the BJP candidate, I will break into your homes and beat you”—a threat issued by a BJP leader herself!

From 0:30 mark onwards, the news reporter says in Bengali that agitation was due to her not getting a ticket from the BJP, but giving it to someone else. View a screenshot of this –

Following this, another Youtube video uploaded by HT Bangla on 9 February 2022, titled : “BJP প্রার্থীকে ‘ভোট দিলে ঘরে আগুন লাগিয়ে দেব’, হুমকি খোদ BJP নেত্রীর” Translated into English, it reads : “BJP leader threatens to set house on fire if they vote for official BJP candidate” The description stated that this incident took place in Kharagpur and the warning was given by a BJP woman leader.

Next, using some keywords like “Kharagpur” and “BJP woman leader warning” combined with the incident date, we searched for more reports. We landed on a News18 Bangla report, updated on Feb’ 09, 2022, titled (translated into English) : “Bengal BJP: “If you vote for BJP, I will set you on fire…” BJP leader shouts warning! Tulkalam Kharagpur…” The report states that the woman in the video was “বেবি কোলের” or in English, Baby Koley. The report further mentions that she had to pay 5 lakh rupees to obtain a ticket and when she did not, they gave the ticket to someone else.

Upon searching for any clarification on this recent claim from official sources, we learnt that the West Bengal Police has flagged this on X. They wrote that “This video relates to an incident of 27 February 2022. It is being falsely circulated as recent incident. Legal action will be taken against those who are circulating this misleading video.” Attached to the post is an image from the video, labeled as misleading.

As Legislative Assembly elections are happening in west bengal, the old video clip is being circulated as recent incident.

Thus, the claim is false.
