Image of moist-eyed farmer sitting in protest on smooth road surrounded by policemen goes viral; Fact Check

An image showing a hapless farmer sitting on the road surrounded by policemen is going viral as part of the ongoing Dilli Chalo protest at Delhi borders, where farmers from Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh are staging protests to enter the capital demanding a guarantee of Minimum Support Price (MSP), among others.

In this context, several images and videos have gone viral, some of them already proved old or fake. The new image going viral attracts the attention of a viewer owing to the helpless situation visible on the face of a farmer, surrounded by policemen on the road.

The caption reads in Hindi: “होंगी तुम्हारे पास, जमाने भर की डिग्रियां पर…. अन्न दाताओं की नम आँखों को ना पढ़ सको तो अनपढ़ हो तुम….!” [Translated version reads: You will have degrees for the rest of your life. (But) If you can’t read the moist eyes of farmers then you are an illiterate…!”]

FACT CHECK

Digiteye India found the image unusual as many policemen were wearing a medical mask that was a constant feature of the pandemic days and not now. Moreover, the road was too smooth that’s unlikely to find in Delhi border, though possible inside resorts or private properties. Finally, we ran the AI image detection tools — Hive Moderation and AI or Not — and the results show positive as seen below:

The Hive Moderation confirmed that the image was 100% AI-generated while the AI or Not tool said that the image was ‘likely AI’.

Conclusion: The image is an AI-generated picture and it’s confirmed by AI detection tools — Hive Moderation and ‘AI or Not’.
