FACT CHECK
DigitEYE India decided to investigate this claim and found it to be false. There is no reliable evidence indicating that Elon Musk was involved in any talks to acquire Spirit Airlines. No official announcements, verified statements, or public remarks from Musk support such a claim.
We first conducted a web search with the phrase “Spirit Airlines to be acquired by Musk” to learn more. We learnt that Spirit Airlines shut down operations after its final flight (NK1833 from Detroit to Dallas) landed just after midnight on Saturday, marking the end of nearly two decades of ultra-budget flying. The collapse was driven by a severe fuel cost spike linked to the Iran conflict, which added $10–15 million in weekly expenses, leaving the airline “running out of cash to keep the company operating,” as CEO Dave Davis stated. Following this, we landed on a X post by Flight Radar 24 that also confirmed the closure of Spirit Airlines. The post showcased their official announcement, noting how “It is with great disappointment that on May 2, 2026, Spirit Airlines started an orderly wind-down of our operations, effective immediately. To our Guests: all flights have been cancelled, and customer service is no longer available.” The post further read “We are proud of the impact of our ultra-low-cost model on the industry over the last 34 years and had hoped to serve our Guests for many years to come.”

We verified this by visiting the official website of Spirit Airlines and the full statement can be read here.
According to a CNBC report, back in January, Spirit Airlines was in talks with investment firm Castlelake for a potential takeover as it searched for “a path out of bankruptcy.” The airline had already filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for the second time and was “in active negotiations” over either a standalone restructuring plan or a strategic deal to stay afloat. However, there is no information about Elon Musk or any of his companies being involved in a deal with Spirit Airlines. View a section from the report below –

Having confirmed this, we searched for reports about Elon Musk and Spirit Airlines but did not find any. Elon Musk has made no public comments about Spirit Airlines on X or elsewhere. No announcements have come from Spirit Airlines, Tesla, SpaceX or any involved parties which pertain to Elon Musk.
Thus, the claim is false.
