Claim : Income Tax Return (ITR) deadline for assessment year 2024-25 is extended to September 30, 2025.

Rating : Totally false Five rating

Recently, several social media users have shared a fake notice, stating that ITR deadlines have been extended to 30 September. X user ‘RohitAg81157’ on 14 September 2025 shared such a notice with the caption “#itrduedateextension #ITR2025

The document, dated 14 September 2025 and under the name of “V. Rajitha, Commissioner of Income Tax (Media & Technical Policy),” cited structural revisions in ITR forms, system development needs, and stakeholder concerns as reasons for the extension. The post gained over 10,000 views and can be seen below –

FACT CHECK

DigitEYE India decided to fact check this claim and discovered that the extension to 30 September 2025 is fabricated. Official records confirm the ITR deadline for non-audit cases (ITR-1 to ITR-4) was originally 31 July 2025, extended to 15 September 2025 in May. However due to some portal glitches on the last day, the IT dept extended the due date by one day to 16th Sep. No further extension to 30 September was announced.

The Income Tax Department’s verified account ‘IncomeTaxIndia’ posted on 14 September 2025 explicitly debunking the rumor: “A fake news is in circulation stating that the due date of filing ITRs… has been further extended to 30.09.2025. ✅ The due date for filing ITRs remains 15.09.2025.” View the post below –

Another post was made by the Income Tax Department’s verified account the next day on 15th September, notifying that the deadline has been extended to 16 September, 2025. Nowhere it is mentioned that the deadline was extended to 30th September, 2025. View the post below –

We then checked the official CBTD circular which was issued on 15 September 2025. This official circular extends the deadline only to 16 September 2025 for AY 2025-26, citing e-filing portal overload. It makes no mention of 30 September or the structural revisions as claimed in the fake release, view the official circular below –

A report by the Times of India published on September 18 also clarified that the last date of filing the deadline was on 16th September, 2025. View a section from the article below –

Official CBDT records show only a one-day shift to 16 September due to glitches. There has been no official notice by the Income Tax Department notifying the public of any further extensions.

Thus, the claim is totally false.
