DigitEYE India decided to investigate this claim and found that it was misleading. This incident dates back to September 9, 2025 where the Karnataka Police were clamping down on Chamundi Hill Chalo protesters who were clad in saffron. This protest was against the invitation of Muslim writer Banu Mushtaq to inaugurate the Dasara festival. See the video here.
We first conducted a reverse image search of various keyframes from the video to learn about the matter. News18 Kannada has uploaded the footage of the incident on their Youtube channel that can be seen here.
This search took us to a report published by Kannada Prabha on September 9, 2025. The report observes how the police halted the “Chamundi Hill Chalo” march and counter-protest in Mysuru to avoid communal tension over Dasara inauguration by Muslim writer Banu Mushtaq. Following this, we came across another report published by the Star of Mysore on September 9, 2025. This report directly covers the mistaken detention of a Bengaluru couple (the woman in the saffron saree and her husband) who were visiting the temple. Police assumed that they were part of the protest, and as a precautionary measure detained them briefly at Sangolli Rayanna Circle but released them immediately after realizing that they were pilgrims, not protesters.

Another article published by The Hindu sheds more light on how the Karnataka police controlled the “Chamundi Chalo” rally organized by BJP, VHP and Hindu Jagarana Vedike. The report highlights how the “police had already denied permission to hold the rally in view of the sensitivity of the situation and concern over law and order. Besides, Dasara-related works are underway and the rally could hamper the preparations…”
The Karnataka police did not arrest the woman over her saffron attire rather thought she was a part of the Chamundi Chalo protest and briefly detained here. The detention was part of broader crowd control during the protests, not targeted the woman due to her attire or being a Hindu.
Thus, the claim is misleading.
