FACT CHECK

DigitEYE India decided to investigate this claim and discovered that it is false. The footage shows a two year old girl falling from the fifth floor flat and being caught in a rescue in China. The incident is genuine and highlights a brave act, but it happened in China in 2022, not in Japan as mentioned in the claim.

We first conducted a reverse image search on various keyframes from the video to learn more about the context. The search took us to a Youtube short uploaded by ChinaViewTV, titled : “Two young people catch two-year-old girl falling off sixth floor” The description mentions  “Two young people rushed to catch a two-year-old girl who fell from the sixth floor in Tongxiang City, east China’s Zhejiang.” View the video and screenshot of this below –

Following this, we conducted a web search with the phrase “2 year old baby recused after falling from the 5th floor, China” to verify further. According to a report by MetroUK, the girl “plummeted out of a fifth-storey window”, landed on a first-floor terrace, and “Shen Dong, 31 parking his car across the street, heard the loud bang, noticed this and caught hold of her before she hit the concrete.” View a section from the report below –

However, another report by Peopleapp which is translated into English mentions that the girl fell from the 6th floor (or fifth floor flat), and this “scene unfolded in Tongxiang City, Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province” The report also writes how “the commendation team of the Tongxiang City Public Security Bureau in Zhejiang Province confirmed the two individuals’ acts of bravery and issued them certificates of recognition.” View a section of this below –

Lastly, we conducted searches for a 3 year old child falling from the fifth/sixth floor in Japan but did not come across any credible reports. The mislabeling as “Japan” is a recurring error in viral reposts shared online.

Thus, the claim is false.
